Monitor Refresh Rate, VRR and FPS Caps: Set Them Up Together

What Hz and FPS mean

Refresh rate in hertz is how often a display can update its image each second. FPS is how many frames the PC renders. A 144 Hz monitor can show up to 144 distinct updates per second, but the game must produce frames and the selected mode must actually run at 144 Hz. Higher refresh can improve motion clarity and responsiveness, while the benefit varies by game, input and individual perception.

Set a supported refresh rate

In Windows, open Advanced display and select a refresh rate the monitor supports. The list depends on the display, cable, connection and resolution. A high refresh mode can make motion look smoother, but it does not force a game to render that many frames.

Check resolution and connection together

A monitor may support its fastest mode only at certain resolutions, color settings or ports. Read the display manual for its supported combinations. In Advanced display, verify the selected display and active signal mode. In the game, confirm the selected screen and resolution. If the expected rate is missing, check the cable and port specification before changing GPU settings.

Understand variable refresh

When supported by both display and graphics hardware, variable refresh rate (VRR) lets the display adjust refresh timing within a supported range. Enable it in the monitor's on screen menu and the relevant graphics settings. Confirm the mode is active in a game that can sustain a suitable frame rate. The experience depends on the display's VRR range and implementation.

VRR, V Sync and tearing

Tearing occurs when parts of different frames appear in one display update. V Sync can prevent it but may add latency or uneven pacing in some conditions. VRR helps align display updates with rendered frames inside its supported range. Test the display and GPU maker recommended combination, then compare it in your games.

Choose a cap for consistency

A frame rate cap can reduce unnecessary load and help keep frame pacing predictable. Test in the same scene at a cap your system can hold consistently. If using VRR, follow the monitor or GPU vendor's guidance for its supported range; do not assume one cap works for every display. V Sync behavior can vary with VRR and game settings.

Check the whole path

Use the cable and port specified for the target resolution and refresh. Check the monitor OSD, Windows display page and in game mode. If motion still looks wrong, compare another cable or port only when supported, and verify the game is not using a different display.

Prefer a stable experience

Record the original settings and test one change at a time. Compare frame time consistency and input feel as well as the FPS counter. A stable cap often feels better than a higher but erratic number.
