Install normal updates deliberately
Use Windows Update for supported system updates and the PC or component maker's official channel for drivers. Save work and restart when a change requires it. Avoid unofficial driver bundles and debloat scripts that remove services without explaining the consequences.
Confirm the basics
Check that the display is connected to the intended graphics output, Windows is using the monitor's supported refresh rate, and the game runs at the intended resolution. In Windows Settings, review Gaming options and the per app Graphics settings when relevant. The available choices vary by Windows version, hardware and display.
Test game-specific options
Use a repeatable scene to compare window mode, frame cap, V Sync or variable refresh settings. Windows 11 includes optimizations for some DirectX 10 and 11 games running windowed or borderless; availability and effect depend on the game and system. Change one setting at a time and keep a note of the original value.
Keep protection and services intact
Do not disable antivirus, firewall, updates, anti cheat components or random Windows services for a speculative frame rate gain. Security and online play can depend on them. If a trusted troubleshooting guide recommends a change, verify the exact Windows build and make a restore point or other recovery plan first.
Evaluate what you feel
A smooth frame time pattern and reliable controls matter as much as peak FPS. Compare multiple runs, include the same settings, and revert changes that create instability, broken peripherals or worse responsiveness. There is no universal checklist item that guarantees a fixed FPS increase.
